Diploma In Dispensing Opticianry
This programme is design to expose the students to the theory and practice of dispensing opticianry in six semesters. This programme is regulated by optometrists and dispensing opticians registration board of Nigeria (ODORBN), which is a federal government parastatal invest with the duties among others of regulating optometry and dispensing opticianry training and practice in Nigeria established vide Decree 34 of 1987 (now CAP 09 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2014).
Goal and objectives
- To produce skilled manpower in the art of ophthalmic dispensing (i.e. mounting of spectacle lenses on frames, production of lenses, marketing of eye wares)
- To provide such training as would equip graduates of the programme to collaborate with other ophthalmic practitioners in providing eye-care services.
- To prepare students towards qualifying for registration with the Board.
- To produce dispensing opticians who could satisfy internationally recognised standards in dispensing optics.
- To prepare graduates of the programme for higher training (HNDDO) in the production of lenses, frames and ocular prostheses.
Employment opportunities
- Graduates of the programme could be employed in hospitals/clinics with dispensing units (public or private).
- They could work in optometry clinic.
- They could also be employed in surfacing plants.
- They could go into self-employment by setting-up dispensing laboratories to service eye clinics/optometry clinics, hospitals, general public.
- Entry requirement
- Candidates who seek admission into this programme must possess a minimum of four (4) credits in WAEC/NECO/SSCE at not more than two (2) sittings in the following subjects: English language, mathematics, and physics, and any other science subject.
- However, a candidate with a minimum of 10 years cognate experience in optical dispensing (apprenticeship), who has two (2) or three (3) credits in any of these subjects may also be considered for admission.
